Fresh Covid cases decline in state by 58 pc in 10 days

Providing a sigh of relief to the doctors, after a concerning spike in the daily caseload of novel coronavirus for two months, Maharashtra reported a drop of 58 percent in registration of new cases in the past 10 days.

An analysis of data by The Indian Express showed that between April 30 and May 9, a total of 1,902 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in the state. But in the next ten days, between May 10 and 19, it dropped to 790.

The trend of rising Covid cases was due to the XBB.1.16 variant of Omicron. On average, the state had been reporting around 1,000 Covid cases daily.

“We always witness such a surge in cases whenever a new variant appears in the community. This time, it was XBB.1.16 which is quite infectious. So, suddenly a large number of people got infected. But gradually, it settled down,” said Dr Pradip Awate, the former state surveillance officer.

Dr Subhash Salunkhe, the new chairman of the Covid-19 Task Force said that although the cases surged, the hospitalisation remained below 2 per cent. “Despite the sudden rise in cases, the state didn’t record anything above 2,000 daily caseload. Other neighbouring districts like Raigad, Thane also recorded a jump in cases but, all nothing was concerning,” he said.

On Sunday, the state reported only 77 new Covid-19 cases. Due to the flattening of the pandemic curve, the active Covid-19 has also dropped to below 500 in the state. However, officials also outlined the need to keep tracking the new variants of SARS-Cov-2 through genome sequencing as a precautionary measure.

“Until we get struck by another variant, we don’t have to worry. Just like swine flu, SARS-Cov-2 will keep rearing its head during seasonal changes which provides the suitable environment for the virus to thrive,” said Dr Awate.
